The release evening for Vanessa Sinclair’s book Switching Mirrors in Gothenburg took place at the legendary bookstore Aniara. Vanessa read her beautiful cut-ups to live weird music improvised by Joachim Nordwall and myself. Hard to describe, so I’ll post the recording here instead. Enjoy! More information about the book can be found HERE! To find more great music, please visit Highbrow Lowlife and Ideal Recordings.
Vampiric art really bugs me
At times, huge predators can be pretty cuddly. Big lions, ferocious tigers and majestic birds of prey can certainly evoke sympathy, although they’d love to tear you to pieces and feed you to their young. In part, this is because some animals have been endowed with recognisable (i.e. “human”) qualities in myths through the ages – from Aesop’s fables to Lion Kings and Jungle Books. The good animals are beautiful, admirable and struggling for good causes, while the evil animal characters (hyenas, snakes, vultures, etc) are ugly, threatening, repulsive and thereby inherently devious. On a good day, we can extend our sympathies to more species than those conveniently mythologised. After all, even hyenas lovingly take care of their small ones, although it may not be a matter of saving up for college but rather providing some half-rotten spoil, still encrusted with the anguished blood of a helpless victim. But does this apply to non-mammals too? Strangely enough, there seems to be a...
I like Audio Spirits
Audio Spirits are a great Cotton Ferox offshoot with Thomas Tibert and Bartosz Samitowski. Their EP Truly is out on Highbrow Lowlife and is a great manifestation of musical innovation and psychonautic audacity. We’re talking deep inner space here, and sink quickly into a warm and ethereal womb-like void filled with exploratory desire. As always when these gentlemen are involved, it’s a “no prisoners” attitude that sets the pace. We are thrust into their soundscape and then float on freely – we have no choice, it seems. Ambient sounds lure you into Samitowski’s voice, intoning some dark incantation. A spell or an expression of existential hope(lessness)? We will probably never know. No matter what, Audio Spirits deliver the soundscape goods and it’s always a disturbingly pleasurable and memorable experience. They have also recently collaborated with Japanese artist Kazuya Nagoya on the single For Dahomey. Really great stuff! Check out...
Treasures from the musical vaults
I’ve been sorting through the musical archives and have found a lot of old goodies. They will from now on be posted at the Highbrow Lowlife page at Soundcloud. First to go are two Polish concerts, one from the Intermediale festival in Legnica (2008) and one from the Trans-Wizje festival in Warsaw (2013). Both very good concerts, and from distinctly different CF eras. Thomas Tibert and myself in good shape! If you’d like to listen to more music by Cotton Ferox, please visit Highbrow Lowlife. Thanks!
