What happens is usually that you’re overwhelmed by music when you’re young. I’ve been no exception to that. From day one it’s been there. Right after I was born there was a buzz at the door of my parents’ place. It was Ornette Coleman who came by with a cradle he’d bought for me. True story! The hand that rocks (or buys) the cradle, etc.
My father ran a jazz club in Stockholm in the 60s, “The Golden Circle”, so my childhood was permeated by listening to weird honking and psych(ot)ic psynchopations. I’m sure it affected me somehow.
When it became time for me to individuate myself out of that, I went in two directions: rock’n’roll and experimental. I’ve more or less stayed true to that ever since.
In 1987 I wanted to try to go from impressions to expressions. I started a band called White Stains, which mutated into many different line-ups and styles up until 1994. Then I worked on my own up until 2000, when my old White Stains friend Thomas Tibert and myself formed Cotton Ferox. I’ve also kept a few other projects on the side: Understen (with Jan Ekman), Sinnelag and Deform Project (both solo).
I can’t really explain what makes music “good” or “fascinating”. Like much in life, music just is. It’s been an integral part of all my life and to be able to make new music in new ways, either in the studio or “live”, is a privilege indeed. I used to say that music has been the mediator between my writing and my taking pictures. I don’t know exactly what that means but it sounds good. As does music.
