Here to go 2014 coming up

Beginning on Friday the 30th of May, the Here To Go symposium returns with a packed program. As a part of the larger Meta.Morf art biennale in Trondheim, Here To Go distinguishes itself by focusing on occultural strains and manifestations in contemporary culture. Here To Go takes place at Dokkhuset, Dokkparken 4 in Trondheim. More information about the event can be found here!

Friday the 30th of May means an evening of performances at the beautiful Dokkehuset venue in central Trondheim. American rhythmagician Z’EV, Vicki Bennett’s People Like Us, Scarlet Imprint’s Alkistis Dimech and then Angela Edwards flanked by Cotton Ferox… That’s quite a mouthful for one evening.

Cotton Ferox will do their best to augment Ms Edwards’ Pomba Gira invocation live on stage, and in this sense it will be a very different kind of “concert”. For me (and I’m sure the other half of Cotton Ferox, Thomas Tibert, feels the same way), it’s an honor to provide the aural atmosphere for an artist as intense as Ms Edwards. There are very few performance artists around who go to such lengths to combine the artistic and the spiritual in a public setting, and in such a physically present and mind altering way.

There is a catalog for the event that will be available at Dokkehuset, and also from TRAPART very soon. The catalog is a collaboration between Trapart Books, Forum Nidrosiae and Meta.Morf.

PROGRAM FOR MAY 30th, 8 pm to Midnight:

• Alkistis Dimech & Z’EV
• People Like Us: Consequences (One Thing Leads To Another)

Saturday the 31st of May is the date of the symposium proper.

For those specifically interested in Z’EV, please note that there will be a special performance of Yantra Tantra on Thursday the 29th of May. This takes place at Trøndelag Teater at Prinsens gate 18/20.

YANTRA = the mandala like visual art from India which, in fact, are created to depict particular sonic wave forms.
TANTRA = physical practise

YANTRA TANTRA then, is the title chosen by Z’EV to refer to particular sonic events where the intent is about triggering a transformative experience rather than simply producing musical enjoyment.

These events occur in the complete dark with the participants lying on mats.

Their purpose is to produce a synaesthetic experience in the listener, that is, the audio becomes visual and people are seeing what they are hearing.

The visuals are produced by what is known as phosphene activity. For example, most people see colors or geometric patterns (pressure phosphenes) when they close their eyes and press against their eyeballs.

So when placed in absolute darkness and presented with an encompassing sonic environment, this sensory input begins to drive one’s phosphene activity.

And being in the dark, when one opens one’s eyes, one perceives the visuals as being ‘outside’ ones self.

People report a variety of psychic / emotional experiences focused through a range of visualizations that match descriptions of light visions in the ancient Vedic scriptures and in yoga meditation texts of the Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

These range from abstract firework-like flashings to geometric imagery to cartoon-like animations to visions that are as representational as if they were a dream or guided meditation.
